How to use it so it actually sticks

  1. Trace the three grey characters, following the stroke order. Slowly. The point is to teach your hand a movement, not to fill boxes.
  2. Cover the guides and write from memory. The moment you start copying rather than recalling, stop that row.
  3. Read the row aloud, out of order. Say the sound as you write it — sound, shape and movement encoded together are far harder to lose.
  4. Circle whatever made you hesitate. That is tomorrow's row, and it is a much better study list than starting again from .

Fifteen focused minutes a day beats a two-hour session you never repeat. Kana rewards frequency, and the whole chart is genuinely finishable inside a fortnight at that pace.

About these worksheets

Are these hiragana worksheets really free?
Yes. The practice sheet on this page prints straight from your browser with no email address and no account. The free Kana Starter Pack asks for an email so it can be sent to you, and the complete workbook is a paid product at $9.
What paper size do they print on?
The sheet is laid out to fit A4 and US Letter without changes. In the print dialog, choose portrait and set margins to default. If your browser offers a "background graphics" option you can leave it off — the boxes are drawn as borders, not as images.
Can I use these on a tablet instead of paper?
Yes. Print to PDF instead of to a printer, then open the file in any handwriting app that supports layers or annotation. The workbook is supplied as a PDF for exactly this reason.
How many times should I write each character?
Trace the three grey characters, then fill as many blank boxes as you can from memory before you look back. Two or three correct from memory is worth more than eight copied, so stop the row when you start copying.
Can I print these for a class?
Yes, for your own classroom or study group. Please link to hikarii.net rather than re-hosting the file, and do not resell it.
What comes after tracing?
